Do you know how many links to your page are recognized by Google? Check this and compare with your competitors link popularity using a free tool in the table on the right. A better link popularity will considerably increase your website traffic. If your links are placed well, then you have high chances of getting consistent and targeted traffic. Most of the major search engines now consider Link Popularity as one of the factor into their ranking algorithms. Hence having more number of links to your site can actually improve your search engine rankings. However, if the number of reciprocal links on your pages exceeds the "reasonable number" your website may get penalized by search engines for "link spamming". The most valuable are the so called "one-way" incoming links. There is no danger to them; there is no way that a search engine can ever penalize a website for links pointing to it from another site that are not reciprocated. And, to a search engine, one way incoming links to a site is the most reliable measure of it's importance.
